About ten kilometres from the campsite, a truly unique road awaits you… Grab the wheel (or the handlebars) and head for Combe Laval, one of the most spectacular sites in the Vercors. Here, the road isn’t just a means of getting around… it’s a real experience! Carved into the cliff face, it winds its way above the abyss, offering breathtaking views of the Vercors landscape on the Drôme side. With every bend, the landscape reveals itself a little more: vertiginous cliffs, forests stretching as far as the eye can see, and the tranquillity that reigns all around. It features no fewer than eleven tunnels and countless cantilevered sections, perched high above the abyss… Whether you’re travelling by car, motorbike or, for the bravest (and those with strong calves), by bike, crossing the Combe Laval is an unforgettable experience. And of course, take the time to stop at the viewpoints to admire the views from the heights… and catch your breath, for the brave walkers. It’s also the perfect spot for a few souvenir photos that are sure to make people jealous when you get back. In short, the Combe Laval is a whirlwind of emotions, spectacular scenery and thrills. A local must-see, to be experienced at least once – and why not revisit it on your next trip to the Vercors…
Charming villages to explore around St-Jean-en-Royans: from colourful houses to the charm of the Vercors
How about taking a little break from the thrills (a bit of rest is what holidays are all about, after all) and exploring the charming villages around St-Jean-en-Royans? Some of them really do have that certain something that makes you want to slow down… and pull out your camera every couple of minutes! For your first stop, you simply can’t miss the charming village of Pont-en-Royans (11 km from the campsite), a real-life postcard. With its famous colourful houses perched above the river, the setting is simply unique (and incredibly Instagram-worthy). You wander through its narrow streets, stroll along the water’s edge, stop ‘just for a minute’ to admire the view… and end up staying far longer than planned. With its heritage, peaceful atmosphere and little spots perfect for a sweet treat, it’s clearly a must-see. Just a few minutes away, make a second stop at Beauvoir-en-Royans, which offers a different yet equally charming atmosphere. More low-key, this village charms visitors with its authentic feel and natural setting. It’s also the ideal starting point for exploring the medieval site, the famous Couvent des Carmes (listed as a Historic Monument), or for strolling around the Jardin des Fontaines Pétrifiantes. With its gardens, cliffs and heritage, the place has a slightly timeless feel that’s truly refreshing. For your final stop, head about twenty kilometres away to the village of Saint-Antoine-L’Abbaye (listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France), a veritable medieval treasure that charms with its cobbled streets, old houses and, of course, its stunning abbey. Strolling through the village is a bit like stepping back in time: with local crafts, shops selling regional specialities and welcoming cafés, every corner invites you to explore. As you follow the road winding through the heart of the gorges, you’ll be travelling alongside the River Bourne. Depending on the light, its waters shift between deep blue and vibrant green, and quite frankly, it makes you want to stop (often) to admire the scenery… or dip your toes in when the heat gets to you. The cliffs surrounding you reflect thousands of years of geological history, and their height can sometimes make your head spin. But rest assured, the view is well worth the detour! Photography enthusiasts will have plenty to fill their galleries with, and our nature-loving campers can enjoy the surrounding tranquillity and the beauty of the surroundings. Several stops and vantage points line the route, perfect for an impromptu picnic break or a short stroll. And for the more adventurous, some paths allow you to venture closer to the river or discover even more impressive panoramic views. Both accessible and spectacular, the Gorges de la Bourne are the perfect outing for families, couples or friends. A word of advice: allow a little more time than you’d planned… because here, you’ll often find yourself stopping to admire every nook and cranny…

It’s the story of a man, Ferdinand Cheval, who one day decided to transform a simple stone he’d found on his way… into a monumental work of art. Yes, nothing less! For over 30 years, this somewhat dreamy (and very determined) postman built this extraordinary palace all by himself. The result? A fascinating building that blends architectural styles, influences and boundless imagination. You’ll find inspiration drawn from all over the world: temples, castles, caves… As you wander through the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Every detail catches the eye: sculptures, surprising shapes, inscriptions… It’s a veritable artistic labyrinth, but one in which you’ll delight in getting lost! What makes the visit even more impressive is knowing that everything was built by hand, without machines, using only patience and a great deal (yes, a great deal) of determination. Accessible to all, this unique site will appeal equally to art lovers and curious visitors in search of original discoveries. It’s the perfect family outing, where young and old alike can let their imaginations run wild. In short, the Palais Idéal is a timeless escape, a place that surprises, amuses and inspires. And between you and me, it makes a change from the usual castles… You won’t see anything like it anywhere else!
A getaway to the Vercors Regional Nature Park: hikes amidst breathtaking panoramas and spectacular viewpoints
Around the Les Bords de Lyonne campsite in Saint-Jean-en-Royans, the Vercors opens up before you like a vast playground – but a natural one. Here, hiking isn’t just about walking… it’s about discovering breathtaking scenery, breathing in the fresh air to your heart’s content and, sometimes, discovering new muscles in your legs (but for a good cause!). Whether you’re a fan of leisurely strolls or prefer slightly more challenging hikes, there’s something for every level. And the good news is: no need to drive for hours – the most beautiful routes often start just a stone’s throw from the campsite! For an accessible and enjoyable outing, head for the trails around Saint-Jean-en-Royans. You’ll find easy trails suitable for the whole family, offering a gentle warm-up. With woodland, small streams and secluded viewpoints, it’s the perfect way to enjoy yourself without breaking a sweat (or hardly any at all).
For an easy hike, head out on the Sentier des Gorges de la Lyonne: an ideal route for a leisurely stroll in a cool, shaded setting that runs alongside the river (around 5km – 1½ to 2 hours). Perfect for a family outing or to stretch your legs without too much effort, and with a little ‘feet in the water’ break to reward yourself at the end of the walk!
For a moderate hike, the Combe Laval viewpoint is a must-see! With its breathtaking views of the Vercors cliffs, you’ll soon forget the climb as the effort is quickly rewarded (approx. 8km – 3 to 4 hours).
Finally, for walkers who aren’t afraid of a challenge, head to the Hauts Plateaux du Vercors (Font d’Urle area) for a wild, authentic and challenging hike (12 to 15 km – 5 to 6 hours).
And for those who like to combine a stroll with a bit of coolness, some trails run alongside rivers or through gorges. Perfect for taking a break with your feet in the water (and recovering a bit before setting off again – we won’t judge).In short, hiking in the Vercors means choosing between exertion and enjoyment… or rather, combining the two. An underground adventure at the Choranche Caves
To all those who love to combine adventure, curiosity and, why not, a touch of coolness: head to the Choranche Caves. A real must-see in the area around Saint-Romans!
The Choranche Caves (20 km from the campsite) are a true underground spectacle. With finely sculpted stalactites, elegant stalagmites and crystal-clear underground rivers, every step invites you to explore. You can even enjoy a guided tour that will immerse you in thousands of years of geology, whilst remaining fun and accessible for the whole family. It’s easy to be amazed by the vast chambers and hidden nooks and crannies. The light, in turn, sets the scene and reveals the magic of the place. Bonus: the underground river and its famous proteus (those little blind fish) will delight curious visitors of all ages.
Combining adventure, wonder and a welcome coolness (the temperature stays around 10°C all year round, perfect for a refreshing break after a day in the sun, but don’t forget a light jumper), these caves offer a unique way to discover the Vercors in a different light. You’ll emerge with stars in your eyes, your head full of memories (and, of course, lovely stories to share).
Vassieux-en-Vercors: a slice of history and wide open spaces
About thirty kilometres from the campsite, Vassieux-en-Vercors is a village that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Here, you can breathe deeply, take it all in… and learn more about the rich history of this region.
When it comes to nature, Vassieux-en-Vercors is a little paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. This village is nestled in the heart of an open plateau, surrounded by the characteristic landscapes of the Vercors: meadows, forests and panoramic views stretching as far as the eye can see. Perfect for a leisurely stroll, an impromptu picnic or simply to enjoy the peace and quiet (the real kind, without any background noise). Hiking enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with numerous accessible trails around the village. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a more challenging hike, the routes always offer that little something extra: unobstructed views, an unexpected encounter and, of course, a feeling of total freedom!
But Vassieux-en-Vercors is also a place steeped in history. The village was a key centre of the Resistance during the Second World War. To gain a better understanding of this period, head to the Vercors Resistance Memorial for an engaging visit. Modern and immersive, it accurately recounts the key events. A moving experience, accessible to all, which brings the surrounding landscapes to life. Nearby, the Vassieux-en-Vercors National Necropolis also invites reflection. A sober and respectful place, which commemorates the courage of those who shaped the history of the Vercors. But for a lighter touch (because that’s what holidays are all about too), you can also enjoy outdoor activities: cycling, cross-country skiing in winter, or even wildlife spotting for the most patient among you!
Immerse yourself in the great outdoors! Discover rock climbing and via ferrata in the Vercors: the Royans’ vertical playground
Around Saint-Jean-en-Royans, the Vercors isn’t just beautiful… it’s also quite the adventure. Here, the cliffs clearly invite you to look up! The good news is that whether you’re a beginner climber or someone who loves a thrill, the region has something for every level.
Just a stone’s throw from the campsite, the Royans and Vercors areas offer numerous limestone cliffs ideal for climbing. There are routes suitable for all levels, often easily accessible from the valley. It’s the perfect place for a first experience, supervised by instructors or independently for the more experienced. The areas around Saint-Jean-en-Royans are particularly popular for their diversity and exceptional natural setting, nestled between river and cliffs. For a gentle introduction, some nearby sites offer short, well-equipped routes, perfect for learning the basics: belaying, placing your feet (and dealing with that moment when you realise you’re actually quite high up). The Royans cliffs are ideal for this, with areas designed to help you progress at your own pace whilst enjoying the scenery. If you fancy getting a bit higher without actually ‘free climbing’, the via ferrata is an excellent alternative. In the Vercors massif, several routes allow you to make your way up walls equipped with cables, ladders and suspension bridges. It’s a really enjoyable mix of hiking and climbing, with just the right amount of adrenaline to spice up the outing. Among the areas accessible from the campsite, the via ferrata in the Choranche and Col du Rousset region is particularly well-known. There are varied routes here, with aerial sections and spectacular views of the gorges and surrounding cliffs. Thrills guaranteed… and without taking any risks! Closer to Royans, via corda routes and roped-up climbs round off the offering for those who want to experience vertical climbing in a different way, in a more natural and adventurous setting.
